Jacky, our chair, visited Paxcroft Mead school and introduced Biss Meadows to Year 6 pupils and talked about our Pond Restoration Project. The maths group then conducted a survey to find out who has heard about Biss Meadows, who already visits Biss Meadows and a list of possible activities to do there. They then consulted other children to find out which activities children would most like to participate in. The children then created bar charts/pie charts and summarised their findings.
Jacky and Leo, Wiltshire Council's Countryside Ranger, organised a brilliant morning's activities at Biss Meadows for the pupils involved. Leo taught us how to make wood sculptures and his colleagues Alison & Vicky organised an excellent nature trail. The Paxcroft pupils were brilliantly behaved and rewarded with hot chocolate and marshmallows toasted on a fire before they returned back to school. A huge thank you is due to Leo and his team and Jacky for ensuring the morning was so well organised and enjoyable.
Following their visit the pupils shared their experience during an assembly slot.
The visit to Biss Meadows was recorded by the Wiltshire Times. Click here to read the article at the WT website (opens new window/tab). This is our biggest publicity to-date and gives mention of the Pond Project and our Big Lottery bid foir £50,000.
We very much hope to engage other local schools in future events organised at Biss Meadows; not only does this encourage local children to explore a wonderful natural resource on their doorstep it has also helped greatly with our Big Lottery Grant Application, showing how were can involve the local community in our project.
