Nature Discovery Day - Saturday 30 July 2011

Butterfly Count

We were delighted that Audrey Brown again agreed to lead butterfly walks in Biss Meadows, which allowed us to upload our results to the Big Butterfly Count site.

Two walks took place in different areas of the park. It emerged that we are inundated with Gatekeepers, as Audrey expected.....but we also spotted Large Whites, Small Whites, Green-veined Whites, Speckled Woods, Common Blues, Small Skippers, Meadow Browns, Six Spot Burnet moths and a solitary Red Admiral! We were also very fortunate to spot a Small Copper on our second walk and Audrey spotted Commas prior to our walks - but they did not favour us with their presence at the required times - so could not be recorded!

All our sightings were a great indication of the bio-diversity at Biss Meadows. A huge thank you to all who took part and helped us spot and record the various species - especially to those who braved the thistles (in shorts) and deftly avoid the anthills!!! '

We will add the spottings to our Spotted database soon. Text by Ashley Wicks.
