Guided Bird Walk led by Dr John Austin
 - Sunday 20th February 2011

The weather was perfect for a bird walk, not too sunny and not too cold. Over 30 adults and children joined Dr John Austin for a very enjoyable and productive walk. We had only walked a few metres when we were rewarded with approximately 40 Waxwings in one of the tall poplars next to the River Biss. They stayed long enough for everyone, even the smallest children to focus their binoculars on them.

We continued our walk passed the weir, around the pond and over the bridge in to the George Wimpey area serenaded by beautiful bird song including the wonderful Song Thrush. During the morning we spotted :

Blackbird Great-spotted Woodpecker Mallard Song Thrush (2)
Black-headed Gull        Great Tit Moorhen Starling
Blue Tit Greenfinch Mute Swans Waxwing (c40)
Chaffinch Jackdaw Reed Bunting (pair) Wren
Dunnock Long-tailed Tit Robin Woodpigeon
Goldfinch Magpie Rook

Friends of Biss Meadows Country Park and Trowbridge Watch Group who organised this event were delighted to see so many children and adults alike have a wonderful morning looking for birds, meeting new people and enjoying the Country Park. We are grateful to John for taking the time to share his knowledge with us and opening a window into the birdlife at Biss Meadows.

Why not visit our Spotters page now and record the birds you saw - not only today but everytime you visit Biss Meadows Country Park?
