Tuesday 31st May 2011 - Biss Meadows Group at Flickr

Once you have joined the Friends of Biss Meadows Country Park you can sign-up to Flickr [opens new window]. This is an internet based photo storage and sharing service. It is free for a reasonable number and size of photographs.

After joining Flickr you can apply to join the Flickr Biss Meadows Group (contact the Web Master). On acceptance, you will be able to submit your own Flickr photos to the Group's Pool. A full guide has been written - see the Contributing to the Gallery panel at the bottom right.

Your photos will then appear in the Gallery page under your name.

Summary of Steps

Initial Sign-up Steps

  1. Join Yahoo
    • This is because Flickr is owned by Yahoo.
    • If you already have a Yahoo account then you can use that.
  2. Join Flickr
    • If you already have a Flickr account then you can use that.
  3. Join the Biss Meadows Group at Flickr
    • This allows you to contribute your photos and to join in any discussions.
    • Await confirmation from the Web Master.

Photo Uploading Steps

  1. Select Your Photos
    • Organise your best photos ready for sending to Flickr.
  2. Send Your Photos to Flickr
    • Known as "Uploading", this takes just a minute or so.
      • Uploading is done via the Flickr web site.
      • Alternatively Flickr now has a programme that you can install on your own PC called Flickr Uploadr. It's faster and easier for sending lots of photos to Flickr.
    • You need to submit 5 photos before the account can be active.
    • It may take a day or so for the account to be accepted by Flickr.
  3. Describe Your Photos to Flickr
    • Give each photo a short descriptive title, typically about 6 words.
    • Define some category key words (called tags) [opens new window] so they will appear in the Friends of Biss Meadows web site.
      • With Uploadr these 2 steps are done before you upload.
    • Using a film camera and/or scanning old photos?
      • Then you will need to set the Taken Date - if you don't know the exact date then set the month & year, even if approximate.
  4. Add Your Photos to the Biss Meadow Group Pool
    • Use Flickr's Organise & Create option to add you photos to the pool.
    • Your photos will now be seen on the Friends of Biss Meadows web site either in the Gallery page or on the relevant topic page.
    • It may take some hours before they are visible.

Full instructions are in the guide - see the Contributing to the Gallery panel on the right.

What makes a good photo?
  • It has a focal point of interest
  • The main subject matter is not too small
  • It promotes Biss Meadows in a positive way
  • It highlights the varied species of animals or plants
  • It illustrates the different seasons and weather conditions.
  • Not too bright or too dark
  • There is good contrast
  • It's straight!
  • It is from 500k to 750k in size - this balances clarity with speed of displaying the photo

We are particularly short of photos of:
  • insects
  • birds
  • butterflies
  • dragon and damsel flies
  • fish
  • smaller flowers
  • fungi
  • reptiles
  • amphibians
  • mammals
  • leisure activities
